Curly hair can surely be a dangerous territory to walk on, where you've absolutely no idea where to get started at, what products to invest in and all in all how to take care of the massive coils, right? Moreover, thanks to categorization of different types of curly haired people, mostly people are ill informed about the types and different regimes that go into taking care of it. So here we are yet again, helping you discover what your curl type is, whether they're loose beach curls or tightly coiled around, we've got names for all of it and which products might be best suited for it based on various characteristics of it.

Let us start by discussing about the curl type. There are four curl types, starting from 1 to 4, 1 being the most straight and 4 being the curliest. It is further divided into A, B, C types based on the elasticity of the curls. In total, there are 9 types of curl patterns hanging around. For instance, the 2A curl is mainly identified by the little "S '' shape, it sticks close to the hair and is the cute little beach wavy pattern. It's pretty low maintenance and can be easily straightened as well. Whereas, if we talk about the 4C which by far is the most difficult to manage, probably requiring an entourage of people to take care of it along with a plethora of products, is not the easiest to style. It doesn't clump easily until some gel or oil or mask has been applied and is kinky in short. Therefore, it's very important to determine what kind of a curl type you are, because what may work for say a 3B might end up completely ruining your 2C curls.

Second step after determining your curl pattern is to find out about the porosity of your hair. By porosity what we mean is the ability of your hair to absorb and hold moisture in order to promote a healthy growth of your hair. Now this can again be classified into three categories-

  • High porosity- your hair absorbs moisture white easily but has difficulty retaining it.
  • Medium porosity- your hair absorbs moisture at a decent pace continuously and can hold it well too for a considerable period of time.
  • Low porosity- your hair has difficulty absorbing moisture but when it has penetrated into the hair shaft, it's there and it stays.

If you want to know what the porosity of your hair is then simply do this one tiny experiment.

Step 1: Take a strand of your hair from your comb and make sure it's clean, ie, it doesn't have any product build up which might alter the results.

Step 2: Drop it into a glass of water and let it sit for a few minutes, preferably 10.

Step 3: Observe and check. If the strand is floating in the water then your hair is likely to be less porous because the water hasn't been able to penetrate.Whereas on the other hand, if the strand has sunk into the glass, then your hair likely has high porosity due to which it was easier for the water to penetrate through the hair.

This is just an example, you can take other tests on Google as well to find out about the porosity of your hair.

The last step is to check the elasticity of the hair. Elasticity as you all know, is basically the hairs ability to stretch and return to its original shape. Now, if the hair is really flexible and can be stretched easily then that would mean the hair contains very little protein and too much moisture. This can only be solved by using more protein-based products. On the other hand, if the hair cannot be stretched and breaks easily when tried then that would simply mean the hair contains too much protein for its own good. This in turn would require you to increase moisture in your hair by using leave-in conditioners and more moisture-based products.
